Contemporanea
Film Festival
The fifth goal outlined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development states: “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.” Despite some encouraging developments, gender parity remains far from being achieved. A recent study by the European Women’s Audiovisual Network (EWA) reveals that only one in five European films is directed by a woman.
Guided by these findings, we established an annual festival dedicated to exploring women's perspectives on cinema and the visual arts. Contemporanea was founded with the ambition to support the next generation of women filmmakers and amplify the impact of their work globally. Based in Turin, the festival is committed to fostering a discursive space that explores the transformative power of images, using the past to illuminate the present and shape a more equitable future. The numerous directorial debuts in our lineup reflect Contemporanea’s mission to champion emerging talent. At the same time, dedicating the festival’s third edition to the timeless icon Anna Magnani reminds us that history is always contemporary. Through cinema, visual arts, and in-depth conversations with the creative minds shaping our cultural landscape, we aim to create a space where women artists can experiment and innovate, building a community of independent storytellers.
Contemporanea proudly adheres to the Rules for Ethical Behaviour in the Audiovisual Field sponsored by Women in Film, Television & Media.
